Frequently Asked
Questions

What is a NIF number?

A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal’s tax identification number issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority (Finanças). It is a unique 9-digit number used to identify individuals within the Portuguese tax system.

It is required for many everyday activities, such as opening a bank account, signing contracts, renting or buying property, or dealing with the tax authorities. For anyone planning to live, invest, or carry out financial activities in Portugal, obtaining a NIF is usually one of the first essential steps.

What can I use as proof of identity?

Non-EU citizens must provide a clear scan or photo of the biographical page of their passport. EU citizens may use their national ID card instead, with a clear image of both the front and back.

The document must be valid and clearly visible, with all four corners shown, text fully legible, and no shadows or glare. The signature on your passport must also be clearly visible.

What can I use for proof of address?

Your proof of address must show your residential address and must match the name on your passport exactly. PO boxes and business addresses are not accepted. If you provide a Portuguese address, an additional document will be required – please contact us for further details.

Acceptable examples include a utility bill, the first page of a bank statement, or an official government letter. It must have been issued within the last three months.

The document must be clear and readable, with all four corners visible. If it is written in a non-Roman alphabet, an English translation is required.

How long does it take to receive my NIF?

Most of our clients receive their NIF within 2–5 business days. In some cases, it may take up to 10 business days, particularly during busy periods such as August or shortly after the Christmas holidays.

Processing times ultimately depend on the workload of the Portuguese tax office.

What if the NIF application is for a child?

If the NIF is being requested for someone under 18, a few additional documents are required. These include a birth certificate (or adoption or guardianship document), a copy of a parent or legal guardian’s passport, and proof of address that belongs to the parent or guardian.

These documents allow the Portuguese tax authority to confirm the child’s legal guardian and residential details.

How does your pricing work?

We use a fixed-price model for all of our services, so you know the exact cost upfront. There are no hourly charges, unexpected extras, or hidden fees.

Whether you choose a full relocation package or a standalone service like obtaining a Portuguese NIF, the price you see is the price you pay.

Within 24 hours of submitting your request, we will review your details, confirm your eligibility, and send you a secure payment link by email. Once payment is received, we proceed with your NIF application.

What are the benefits of having a NIF?

Aside from being required for many administrative and financial activities in Portugal, your NIF can also provide certain tax benefits when it is included on eligible receipts. Expenses in specific categories, such as restaurants, hotels, healthcare, transport, veterinary services, hairdressing, and vehicle repairs, may count toward limited annual tax deductions.

Why is a fiscal representative required?

If you are a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, you must appoint a fiscal representative in order to apply for a Portuguese NIF from abroad. While this is not legally required for EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens, in practice the remote application process typically still requires one.

As part of our service, we arrange this for you by connecting you with a qualified Portuguese lawyer who acts as your fiscal representative and submits the NIF application on your behalf. Once you move to Portugal and register a Portuguese address with Finanças, the fiscal representation is automatically removed.

When will I receive my Finanças portal login?

After your NIF is issued, the Portuguese tax authority sends a letter with temporary login details by post. This usually arrives several weeks later. When the letter reaches your fiscal representative, it will be scanned and forwarded to us, and we will then send it directly to you.

Does a NIF make me a tax resident?

No. Having a NIF does not automatically make you a Portuguese tax resident. It is simply a tax identification number used for administrative and financial activities in Portugal.
